Picture me this: you’re getting married and you just picked out the perfect wedding dress. You may have just dropped thousands of dollars on it or you may have found a cheaper option, but regardless, it’s going to be the dress you wear when you say “I Do” – and that’s a big deal! Now all you have to do is find the perfect veil.

You’ve probably obsessed over Pinterest images of those romantic flying veil shots, swooping veil shots and under the veil shots, so you think to yourself, I have to have a veil. As your photographer, I’m so glad you decided to get a veil because, personally, I’m a sucker for veil shots too! BUT, there’s something you need to know about veils before you buy one – not all veils are created equal! Here’s what I mean…

If you’ve ever really taken the time to pay attention to all those veil images you’ve been obsessing over, you’ll notice they all have one thing in common, they are long, light-weight veils. What do I mean by this? Well, just like anything else, veils come in all different shapes and sizes. From long, flowy veils, to short veils, to medium-length, laced veils to beaded veils. You name it. But, if your goal is to recreate those magical flowing veil shots, then you need to focus your attention to the longer, light-weight veils. These veils are perfect because they will catch the wind when you toss them and flow effortlessly to create a gorgeous portrait. 

If you were to choose a shorter, fancy, beaded veil, then the odds are it will be really tough to get a great veil shot. First off, shorter veils don’t catch the wind as well as longer veils and secondly, beads weigh down the veil, which makes it almost impossible for the veil to float in the air when tossed. It will more than likely fall right back down like a ton of bricks when tossed because the beads are way too heavy to allow for the movement you are looking for.

So, when you’re out shopping for your veil with the intention of getting great portraits, keep these tips in mind. It doesn’t have to break the bank to get a great veil that will be perfect for photos.
